Our ferry back to the UK wasn't till 2am on Monday morning, so we had all day Sunday to do as we wished in Belgium. Needless to say recovery from the previous night's Jagermeister-fuelled antics meant we didn't leave the hotel till noon, after which we drove the 50-odd miles to Brussels, capital of Belgium and a truly beautiful city.
Candia and Tony in "Lebeau Soleil",
which is a lovely little musical
instrument maker's workshop which
also doubles as a very nice cafe!
On a previous visit to Brussels I'd been shown a wonderfully Gothic hang-out, "Le Cercueil", which literally translates as "The Coffin". Inside is almost pitch black, beautifully and decadently fitted out in black velvet, and all the tables are glass sheets mounted above real coffins. You can even have your beer served in skull mugs.
Brussels is of course the chocolate capital of the known universe, so needless to say a visit to a chocolatier was mandatory! We found a wonderful place in a statue-filled arcade, and brought back much that was good!
Other than chocolate, Brussels is of course famous for a somewhat odd little statue of a little boy urinating, "Manequin Pis". What's less well known is that in the 1980s someone gave him a sister, "Jeanneke Pis", who can be found down an alleyway close to the main square. We visited both statues, and on the route between them we also encountered a spectacular brass tomb, where generations of tourists have rubbed the brass bright and shiny because of a legend that touching the effigy brings good luck.
Yes, it's a naked woman riding a giant
mouse. No, we don't know what's going
on either! Perhaps it's a pamplemouse?
All too soon it was time to take to the road once more, pounding along the A10/E40 back to France and the ferry home.
