Sometimes, they come back...

Yes folks, for the last and final time, on the 11th of March, 2000, Inkubus Sukkubus returned to The Duchess to kick off their Spring tour.

Last and Final? - Sadly, this venue, famed accross the North as a showcase for upcoming talent and good old fashioned rock bands, closed forever the week after this gig - but it went out with a hell of a bang this night!

The gig was advertised as Inkubus Sukkubus supported by Tony's resurected "Screaming Dead", however on the night we got not two but three bands, for the Cheltenham pagan rockers were joined by "Little Match Girl", a local student band!

The gig started late, as the band's van broke down on the way up from Cheltenham, however they arrived by 8pm, and after a quick set-up, without so much as a soundcheck, Little Match Girl launched into an energetic set that got the crowd, who filled the pub to bursting, nicely warmed up - a very professional performance.

Anyone seen my pint?

Next up were the Screaming Dead, harder and heavier than the first band, and this is where the lack of a sound check showed, as interference bagan to creep into the backline - however a brief pause to adjust amps and instruments, and the show was back on the road - listening to the lyrics, the road to hell!

Again, a brief pause, and then, what we'd all been waiting for, Candia, Tony, Adam and Mick, Inkubus Sukkubus were back! Despite the limited time left (they had only 55 minutes to closing time), they staged yet another storming show, mixing a few new tracks with many old ones, and ending with the customary "Church Of Madness / Devil's Men" combination.

Because of the limited time, they shortened official playlist slightly, which meant that I've still not heard "Samhain" played live (grrr.....), but apart from the two (or was it three?) missed tracks, it was one hell of a show. "Paint It Black" seems to have earned itself a steady place in the set, likewise "Catherine" near the start.

'The rage of unloved wives would seal this beauty's fate'

The full playlist read as follows:

Smile Of Torment
Catherine
Samhain (missed)
Paint It Black
Belladonna & Aconite
Reptile
Wytches
Death & The Virgin (??? - never heard of this one!)
Intercourse With The Vampyre
Starchild
Away With The Faries
Rune
Atrocity (missed)
I Am The One
Song To Pan
Vampyre Erotica
Spellbound
----------
Church Of Madness / All The Devil's Men

Personal high point? For me it was Tony's live rendition of the chant from the end of "Song To Pan",

O great Horned God, Of ages past, Lord of the hunt, Lord of the dance, From that place, Where you lie slain, Come to me, Return again, Across the forests, The fields, The sand, Be once more, Upon this land.

Oh great horned god, of times gone by, Lord of the earth, the sea and the sky, Lord of the forest, and of the glade, Be with us now, and for all our days, Herne, Cernunnos, Karnayna, Pan, Be once more upon this land...

Roll on Cheltenham on Friday the 7th of April - See you there!
