Edwards No8, Birmingham, December 30th, 2005
Edwards No8 is a seriously nice venue, with two floors accessed up long stairways, and suitably dark decor. The gig was held in the top floor room, which is a decent sized and well equiped nightclub venue in it's own right, 'backstage' was a bar in it's own right, albeit out of use.
Navigating round Birmingham to find the place turned out to be a bit of a nightmare though, it took almost as long to find the place as it did to drive from Nottingham to Birmingham!
We still arrived in plenty of time, as Soul Takers weren't due to start till nine. When we got to the top of the stairs we found Candia and Adam, soon joined by Tony, busily signing CDs at the merchandise stand at the back of the venue.
I first encountered Soul Takers supporting Inkubus Sukkubus at the Josephs Well in Leeds back in 2003, and they've clearly come a long way since those days. They suffered a little in that the sound system was more set up for guitars than electronic music, but they still turned in a creditable performance and got a decent reaction from the audience. Their music has developed into an odd mix of medieval chant coupled with EBM dance beats, and while it doesn't have anything like the catchiness of Inkubus Sukkubus, it's an interesting mixture. Later on, after the gig, I blagged a CD off them for the club back in Leeds, and it has to be said they work very well on CD.
Ok, I know I've said this before, but WOW!!! The setlist has been very heavily modified, they opened with Underworld, which has long been a personal favourite of the band, and then stormed into the heavy end of their catalogue, Belladonna and Aconite's pounding tripple-beat followed hard by their classic cover of "Paint It Black", complete with jokes from Candia about having written the track before admiting its true origins. Though as it has now been revealed on the Supernature Forum that Inkubus Sukkubus actually first formed in Italy about 1550, perhaps it was Candia who inspired the Stones in the first place?
The performance was full-on and flat-out, Adam's re-worked bass lines dominating the venue while Tony played like atrue rock legend. I honestly don't think there is anything I can say about Candia's glorious singing that's not been said already, lets just say it was bloody good!
Needless to say the crowd yelled for an encore, and got not only the two tracks reserved for the purpose, but an entirely unplanned rendition of the Wytches Chant, sung unaccompanied, right at the end. It rocked!
After the gig the band retired backstage for a well earned drink before chatting to various people, etc. At this point we discovered that Candia looks very nice in New Rocks. Over Mr Sherlock's fetish for three inch spike heels a discrete veil will be drawn, save to say that tottering about a gothic nightclub a hundred miles from home and evntually going head-first through a door marked "strictly private" and landing in the club-owners office is not perhaps the best way to obtain a free drink!
I'm saying nothing...

A great night, a fantastic gig, and a brilliant end to what has been a really great year for Inkubus Sukkubus. Happy New Year to everyone, and here's a large Jagermeister to a great 2006!
