Intro, Soultakers, and the Scary Bitches.
|
The Camden Underworld. Every venue has it's own stories, it's own feel, it's own atmosphere. But few venues have quite the "alive" feel this one does. It's an odd place, with its strangely off-set layout, and the feeling that you're treading some ancient labyrinth as you work your way past the main bar, along the almost hidden passageway, and into the bizarrely shaped main room. Of course before you could do that you had to pass the merchandise stall, watched over as ever by the fair lady of the North, another wanderer from my beloved Glasgow. |

SoultakersThe first band of the evening were the Soultakers, who previously supported Inkubus Sukkubus at the Josephs Well in Leeds, back in May. Now to be honest their style of music isn't really to my taste, nevertheless they are very good at what they do, especially considering they've not been playing together for long, and they turned in a faultless performance, ending on their very pagan track, "Ritual".

The Scary BitchesNext came the Scary Bitches. Now, I'd heard of them plenty of times, indeed Candia herself had told me they were a "must see" the previous August, but bizarre combinations of fate and interventions by the Imp of the Perverse meant that this was my first chance to see or hear this deliciously alternative act.
What can I say! From the outrageous "Lesbian Vampyres from Outer Space" On a grant from the council? It's a fookin' disgrace! to the utterly insane "There's A Lycanthrope On The Bus" That's when I see the wolf-man, standing at the top of the stairs, fiddling about with a ticket machine and asking if there's any more fares. this was pure entertainment of the highest order. Over the top costumes, over the top lyrics, fantastic headgear and a major overdose of humourous attitude - see them! Before you too find yourself on that bus ride to hell with the werewolfe conductor... |

During the Scary Bitches set, word came through that Inkubus Sukkubus had come down from the World's End Bar above. Candia was watching Alma Geddeon and Deadri's performance from the top of the stairs to the main venue (though fortunately she was neither threatening to turn into a wolf, nor fiddling with a ticket machine of any kind!), and kindly agreed to be photographed with Mel and Steve. Here's the result.

Now, regular readers may remember that back in August 2002 at The Underworld, down by the stage, while waiting for Inkubus Sukkubus to come on, I met a bloke by the name of Faust, with a rather interesting hearse tshirt. Well, at the same place and almost the same time, except this time waiting for The Ghost Of Lemora to come out, I met him again! Small world, Camden!
