This really was one hell of a gig! Just two weeks before Beltaine, and with the weather already unseasonally hot, we found ourselves storming south to the appropriately named city of Coven-try (well, where else would you expect to see a band of witches?). Unfortunately, the directions to the gig, as the listed on Heresy's web site, were in fact directions to their old venue, so a merry half hour was spent staggering around the city centre, in full goth mode, scaring the taxi drivers and freaking the trendies, before we finally managed to locate The Greyhound.
The less that is said about the actual bar in this place the better - sufice to say the bands went somewhere else to drink! It also had a very surreal fully carpeted stage, and the kind of awful wallpaper and curtains that you'd expect to find in your (anti-goth) grannie's front parlour. However, it also had a decent PA, and more importantly this night, tall doors on both sides of the gazebo-masueleum style main room (see picture above) that could be opened to let some air in. By the end of the gig we needed those!

Of course, the folks that really made this night special were all the 'hertics' who attended - OK, who's all here?
Lost Faith
First up were Lost Faith, who opened the show in fine style,
despite the "aunt Maude's front parlour" setting. They played a short but interesting set, with a very nice vocal feel.

After a short break, the very alternative D.U.S.T came on, and played some seriously dark music. D.U.S.T have gone from strength to strength of late - you'll find a link to their site on the links page too.

By now the crowd was really packing the venue - leaving those less than the mandatory gothic seven feet tall to get creative in order to still see the stage...
Then, as ever, with the room packed to capacity, and the still night air getting warmer by the minute, once again the magic began...

"Supernature" made for a powerful and compelling opening, every bit as enchanting live as it is on CD. A quick dip into Wild! for "Smile of Torment", and then we're into classic territory for three tracks, before slamming rght back up to date with the truly stunning "Preacher Man". It does indeed take a priest to unleash the beast...
|
|
For the next two tracks we're off on a poppy-wine fueled psychotropic power-trip, "Starchild" swirling into "Away With The Faeries". Now, if only they'd include
the wonderful "Io Pan" in a future set-list... {hint, hint...}
| <== Is this woman a heretic? |
This dog certainly is!
 |
Traditionally, the band's pagan fans perform a traditional circle dance at some point during the set - formerlly this was done to "Wytches", but "Rune" (also from Wild!) has now taken over. See the various "Heretics!" pictures to see what happened.
|
If you buy the limited-edition Digipack of "Wild!", you get a bonus track at the end, featuring Tony on vocals, called "Atrocity". This is a haunting, and very powerfull, inditement of war and the death and suffering it causes. It's an incredible piece,
and tonight Tony sang it live with vocal backing from Candia and Adam. Wonderful!
Of course we got to hear plenty of Tony's guitar work for the rest of the gig...

"Lucifer Rising", "Vampire Erotica", and the still-incredible "Song To Pan" rounded off the main set, fast, dancable, all too soon it was over!
After a well-earned pause for breath, the band came back and led us into the (as it turned out, first) encore, a blistering performance of their classic tracks "Wytches", and "Paint It Black".
|
|
Again, the band finished, wished us goodnight, and staggered off the stage to some well-earned rest, however the audience wanted more, so after much appreciative cheering and yelling, back they came to give us another thrash through "Lucifer Rising". Yay!
Eventually, though, it had to come to an end, and with the close of this track, one of the best gigs I've yet seen the band play, was over.
|
While the bands had finished, Heresy's goth disco still had two hours to run, and once the band had packed up their gear, they came back into the room and joined the crowd, chatting to people, and generally being available to the fans. Nice touch! In the following pictures and captions, I've tried to capture something of the atmosphere of what followed. It really was a special night. Many thanks to Rob Lee, Morph, and the rest of the Coventry HeReTiCs for organising and promoting it!
